1998 Illustrations for Popular Mechanics magazine This sketch was prepared by Bill Spence to develop his article on Phased Array Optics for the Technology Watch feature of September 1998 Popular Mechanics magazine. This is just one of many possible designs for controlling the phase and amplitude of light on scales smaller than a wavelength in free space. Designs based on reflection instead of transmission are also possible.
